Redefining Nightlife
A disruptive competitor introduced an RTD with the sexually invigorating ingredient ‘horny goat weed’. It gained rapid traction in Trinidad and across the Caribbean. The trend revealed a clear consumer appetite for drinks that explore effects beyond flavour and alcohol. We noticed that consumers were looking for a range of products to supercharge their mood during a night out. As the competitor’s focussed only a singular, overtly sexual effect and raunchy positioning, they left a significant gap in the mainstream market.
CARIB Brewery, the Caribbean's largest brewery, needed to counter this competitor without imitation. The new brand needed to feel bold enough to compete while remaining aspirational and broadly appealing, across genders and age groups. Introducing a zero-alcohol variant as integral part of the core product portfolio was also a first, requiring both internal buy-in and a consumer-facing architecture that made it feel intentional.
Rather than follow the competition into overtly sexual territory, the strategic decision was made to create an entirely new category: mood enhancing RTDs. The new brand was named STEAM, after the fast-growing Caribbean music genre, evoking heat, movement and charged energy.
Three products were developed, each with a distinct function, alcohol percentage and mood. Ultimate Heat 8% ABV targets consumers seeking confidence, punch and sexual attraction. Ultimate Vibe 5% ABV targets social drinkers who want electric energy and euphoria. Ultimate Buzz 0% ABV targets consumers who seek to exchange alcohol for a nightlife high. The prefix ‘Ultimate’ signals elevation: this drink takes you to a next level.
A bold diagonal black band carrying the white STEAM wordmark unifies all three products. It is the only diagonal logo architecture in the regional RTD market and immediately communicates disruption and momentum. Each product is finished in a shrink sleeve (the local market cue for premium RTDs) with an intense, saturated colour palette on a black background. Unique illustration styles bring each mood to life: figurative imagery of attraction for Heat, flowing electric lines for Vibe, and cannabis leaves and mushroom iconography for the mental high of Buzz.
Consumer research generated reactions beyond expectation: participants said they had never seen anything like it and expressed immediate purchase intent. STEAM launched in Trinidad with export markets to follow. Early market response has been exceptional. The brand has not only presented its competitor with a strong counter, it has claimed the high ground of a new, significant drinking category unique to the region.
